How to register for the GRE exam 2022?

Registering for the GRE exams 2022 is pretty straightforward. It can be done in both online and offline formats. There are three ways to register for GRE exams 2022. These are

How to register for the GRE exam

GRE registration is a pretty straightforward process. Here are the step-by-step instructions on how to register for the GRE exam

Create your ETS account

Before registering for the GRE exam, you should create your ETS account. So, visit the official website of ETS and create your ETS account. Remember that the same first and last names you use for creating an account will be used when you register for your GRE test. So, make sure your first and last names match the names on your ID documents. If the user name does not match your ID documents, you won't be able to take the test, or your test scores will be canceled.

Select your GRE Test

After creating your ETS account, Click on Register/Find test centers, dates under My Test to select the GRE Test you want to take - GRE General Test or the GRE Subject Test. The GRE General Test evaluates analytical writing and verbal and quantitative reasoning, while the GRE Subject Test evaluates a student's proficiency in a particular subject. The GRE Subject tests are available in 4 subjects - Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, and Psychology.

Select test location

After selecting the test you want to take, select the place where you want to take the test. Select either test at home or find test centers at or near this location. If you select the find test centers at or near this location, enter your preferred location and click on the Continue button.

You can take the GRE General Test at home or any particular test location, but the GRE Subject test can be taken at paper-delivered test centers. The GRE General Test at home is similar to a test taken at a test center and is convenient for candidates preferring taking their test at home. These tests are monitored through ProctorU®, and testing is available seven days a week.

Select GRE test date and time

After clicking on the Continue button, you will be redirected to a page showing available dates for the GRE test and time slot at your specified location. Click your preferred test date, select the time slot, and click on Register.

Review your information

After selecting the date for the GRE Test, you will be asked whether you have a disability or health issue and need testing accommodations. If you need any accommodations, you must request them through ETS before you schedule your appointment. You will then be asked to review your personal information and indicate your agreement with the testing policies.

GRE search service

ETS provides the GRE Search Service to allow candidates to connect with schools, colleges, fellowship sponsors, and other organizations. If you want to opt for this service, select Yes otherwise, select No and click on Next.

Background information

ETS asks you to provide background information such as country of origin, educational status, native language, reasons for taking the GRE test, eventual graduate education objective, intended enrolment date, graduate school enrolment, etc. This information will help graduate schools discover you if you have opted for the GRE Search Service. This information will also be used in analysis samples, score interpretation data, and research studies.

Payment of the GRE registration fee

The final step of the registration process is the payment of the GRE registration fee. After you confirm the ETS GRE registration, pay the GRE registration fee of $213 for the GRE General Test or $150 for the GRE Subject Test. Once you make the payment, you will receive the payment acknowledgment email.

Registration for the GRE General Test

The GRE General Tests are offered throughout the year, with appointments scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. You can register for the GRE General Test through

ETS account - You can register for the GRE General Test using your ETS account. To register through your ETS account, follow the above-mentioned steps in the GRE registration process. If you prefer to take the GRE home test, you must register through your ETS account. GRE registration at test centers must be done at least two days before the test date and GRE registration at home must be done at least 24 hours before the test date.

Phone - You can register for the GRE General Test via phone at least two days before your preferred test date. You can call the Regional Registration Center (RRC) to register and pay for your test. After completing the registration and making the payment, you will be provided a confirmation number, reporting time, and test center address.

Registration for the GRE Subject Test

The GRE Subject Tests are offered at paper-delivered test centers three times a year (September, October, and April). You can register for the GRE Subject Test through

  • Online registration
  • Mail registration

Online registration: You can register for the GRE Subject Test online using your ETS account. Follow the above-mentioned steps in the GRE registration process for online registration. Online registration is unavailable for candidates with disabilities or health-related issues.

Mail registration: You can register for the GRE Subject Test through the mail by completing the registration form and mailing it with payment to the specified address. ETS must receive the completed form before the registration deadline. It takes up to four weeks to process, and you cannot fax the form. Once your application is processed, ETS will send you a confirmation email with your test choice, test date, test center, and score recipients.

Canceling your GRE registration

You can cancel your GRE test registration in two ways - online or by phone. Log in to your ETS account to cancel your GRE test registration online or contact the Regional Registration Center to cancel your GRE test registration by phone.          
You must cancel your GRE registration at least four days before the test date to receive half of the original test fee as a refund. If you cancel your registration within four days before your test date, all your test fees will be forfeited.
