The Universal College of Learning is an educational institution located in Palmerston North in New Zealand. The institute has a rich history dating back to 1892. Today it is a modern institute of Technology and Polytechnic. There is a huge focus on community and developing life skills at UCOL, achieved in part by their relationship-based teaching approach.

UCOL’s specialities include Health and Sciences, Applied Engineering and Trades, Humanities and Business. Nearly 6000 students attend the institute currently, with international students well-represented and given the opportunity to enhance their learning while developing in-demand skills.

The Universal College of Learning has a modern library offering quiet study rooms, a wealth of knowledge and a vast database of online resources. A range of modern learning and leisure facilities are available to enhance the student experience, from well-equipped classrooms to sports facilities.

Many state-of-the-art facilities have been designed to give you a hands-on learning experience, such as nursing simulation labs, training kitchens and restaurants, a regional trades and technology centre, photography studios and more.

City life

The Universal College of Learning is situated in Palmerston North, a scenic area providing lots of leisure activities alongside a youthful feel. Aesthetically appealing, Palmerston North is densely populated and colloquially called the ‘Rose City’.

Precisely located in New Zealand’s North Island, the wider area is known as ‘the City of Sails’ as it is surrounded by bays and islands. To enjoy the local culture and explore the outdoors, you might want to visit some of their stunning national parks or spend an afternoon in the New Zealand Rugby Museum or Te Manawa art, science and history museum.


A friendly service has been put in place to offer career support, advice, and guidance on how to seek part-time work while you study and employment after you graduate. Some of the services on offer to students include creating a CV and cover letter, learning interview skills, and overall guidance towards pursuing a fruitful career.

International students pay different fees to students from New Zealand. The fees are displayed in full on their programmes (qualifications) page and payment is required in full before teaching starts. The fees are for one year of study.
International student support is available. Dedicated staff in the International Office work to look after the social, educational and practical needs of international students.
The range of scholarships available at the Universal College of Learning are based on financial need, academic merit or a combination of both. There are links available for international students to find the right scholarships for them as New Zealand offer national scholarships.
