Research Culture
Theology and Religious Studies at Chester is a lively and exciting department to pursue your research. By embarking on an MPhil, PhD, or Professional Doctorate in Practical Theology, you will be joining a vibrant and thriving research culture, where academic staff and 100 postgraduate students work together in a supportive, stimulating and thriving environment. As a research community, staff and students regularly meet to hear about each other’s projects. As part of our department seminar series, staff and students give papers, and we invite scholars at the forefront of their field of study to present their work. In addition, as part of the Faculty of Humanities, TRS students can discuss their work with students and meet colleagues working in other disciplines. This range of events exposes you to the breadth of subjects in our field and enables you to engage with cutting edge research in TRS.
As an academic team, we draw on a wide range of approaches to examine Theology and Religious Studies: cultural studies, ethnography, hermeneutics, history, philosophy, quantitative and qualitative methods, media and material studies, practice-based research, sociology, and textual analysis. This is illustrated in our well regarded and influential publications, our membership of professional and academic research bodies, and our participation and hosting of major conferences which attract internationally renowned scholars.
