Why History and Religious Studies?

Our History and Religious Studies degree enables you to discover how belief and history intersect to influence each other and the world around us, shaping individual, social and cultural identities. You’ll gain hands-on experience investigating and interpreting events and evidence, examining key texts, artefacts and ideas, as you develop your understanding of major religious and historical developments, values and trends. Our strong local and international partnerships also offer you the chance to engage with a variety of heritage, social and religious organisations, through guest lectures, placement and field trip opportunities (additional costs may apply, see course web page for details). Previous destinations have included the USA, Canada, India and Spain, in addition to a range of UK locations. Our experienced academic team will help you develop in-demand skills in research, critical thinking and communication, along with expertise in your field. There are opportunities to tailor your studies to your individual interests and ambitions, specialising in subjects such as British, European, American and Soviet history, as well as in major world religions (Islam, Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism and Buddhism), new expressions of spirituality and non-religious movements. The experience and skills you’ll gain will ensure you’re well prepared for a future career in a variety of areas, from heritage to charities, publishing to journalism, teaching to HR, and much more.
