BA (Hons) Music and Korean Studies

University of Sheffield

This degree course allows you to perform, compose and write about music alongside developing your language skills and understanding of Korean culture. As well as intensive language training, we offer modules that cover the whole of East Asia, putting Korean issues into regional and global context. We teach Korean from scratch, so you don’t need previous experience. In your Music modules, you’ll study a diverse range of musical forms, including classical, pop, jazz, folk and world music, as well as optional modules in subjects such as music education, music technology and the music business. You’ll also have the opportunity to develop your performance and composition skills. You will be learning from academics and practitioners who are experts in their field, in departments that are innovators in terms of their research and public engagement. We offer incredible opportunities for our students, both at home and abroad. In your second year, you will spend time studying in Seoul, South Korea at one of our six partner universities, experiencing the culture first hand and honing your language skills by living alongside native speakers. Closer to home, you will be able to lead music workshops in local schools though our student-led volunteering organisation Music in the City, or to get involved in our University Concerts series, which hosts over 100 performances every year. This degree will equip you for a variety of careers within an increasingly interconnected, multilingual and multicultural world. Our graduates are excellent communications, adaptable and culturally-aware, as well as being talented and creative musicians. In addition to careers in international development, teaching, journalism, the charity sector, and translating and interpreting, our graduates have gone on to become composers, performers, music therapists and broadcasters.
