University of York

Our cluster produces policy-relevant research that tackles important questions in areas such as family economics, child outcomes and the labour market.

Prominent themes in our work include:

  • Social networks: the peer effect in the workplace, the family peer effect on mothers’ labour supply and sibling spillover effects in school achievement.
  • Child outcomes: the timing of parental income and a child’s education, and the effect of school and parental investments on children’s cognitive development.
  • Policy interventions: estimating the effect of universal childcare in Germany and evaluating effects of early school exposure in the UK on child development.
  • Parental time investments: the effects of parental and children's time investments and effects of time spent alone and spent with mother on cognitive development during adolescence.
  • Wage gaps: quantifying and explaining wage gaps across gender, ethnic and religious groups.
