Doctor of Philosophy in Chemical Engineering

Washington State University

Faculty research is broadly focused in three synergistic areas: Sustainable Energy Systems, Biomolecular Engineering, and Biomechanics. Within these areas, projects are focused on:

chemical and biological catalysis and kinetics;
chemical and biological fuel cells;
biofilm engineering;
novel sensor technologies;
cardiac and reproductive molecular engineering;
and molecular, cellular, and musculskeletal mechanics.

Specialized equipment includes a suite of instruments for characterizing reactive surface reactions (operando XPS, XRD adn Raman – all with specialized reactors). Unique biological applications of circular dichroism spectroscopy, AFM, and confocal microscopy; robust microelectrode development and application; as well as numerous custom reactors equipped with advanced chemical measurement.

The graduate programs are flexible, allowing students to develop a program that fits individual needs. A master of science is typically completed in 1-2 years, and a doctorate in 4-5 years after completion of the bachelor of science degree.
