Highlights
George Mason University was founded in 1949 as a branch of the University of Virginia in Fairfax County. Ten years later it was named for Founding Father of the USA George Mason, and in 1972 it became a university in its own right. It has four campuses across Virginia at Fairfax, Arlington, Front Royal and Prince William, and also has a campus in South Korea.
There are around 40,000 students at George Mason University, including international students from 130 countries around the world. With the USA it is ranked in the top 100 by Forbes, Washington Monthly and the Academic Ranking of World Universities.
Housing on campus is provided to interested students attending George Mason University. There are several traditional ‘dorm-style’ residence halls: Commonwealth Hall, Presidents Park and Dominion Hall which all offer shared bedrooms and communal bathroom/lounge areas so students can get to know their peers. Liberty Square, The Hub, and Piedmont Hall are the names of some of the suite-style residence halls with private bedrooms but a shared living room and bathrooms.
Apartment-style residence halls are fully furnished apartments allowing a more independent lifestyle. Often this option is chosen by students in higher academic years. If students prefer to live off-campus, they can ask the university for resources on the nearby rental listings.
Thousands of events occur on campus annually, from keynote speaker talks to music concerts and beyond. There are also over 500 student clubs to get involved with, showing the community spirit that pervades the campus. Not only does this present students with entertainment opportunities, but to socialize with people from all different walks of life who share similar interests.
75% of first-year students live on campus, so the university grounds are always bustling with activity: from Asian Pacific American Heritage Month to Greek Week, all cultures and activities are represented in these colorful events.
Campuses
Three of George Mason University's campuses are within the Northern Virginia suburbs of the Washington DC metropolitan area. This means it's easy to get into the US capital city by public transport to explore the best that it has to offer, while enjoying the more affordable living of Fairfax.
