The University of Central Florida was founded in 1963, opening five years later as Florida Technological University. The aim was to provide personnel to support the US space program at the nearby Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. While it remains “America's Space University its focus has expanded and it became a university in 1978.
