Writing Program

The Writing Program at the University of La Verne fosters the study and practice of writing as a life-long method of inquiry and learning foundational to ethical and reflective communication in academic, professional, and civic life.

First-year writing (RCS 110/111 and HONR 111) introduces multimodal writing, argumentation, and critical reading. Upper division courses offer students advanced study in rhetoric and writing, including a practicum in peer tutoring in writing, advanced writing in the disciplines, and special topics in writing and rhetoric.

The Writing Program organizes One Book, One University, a common reading program for incoming first-year students. Students broaden their thinking and perspectives through campus-wide discussions, guest speakers and performers, and lectures from First-Year Learning Experience (FLEX) faculty on topics related to the selected text. Past authors have included Los Angeles Poet Laureate Luis Rodriguez; Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists Sonia Nazario, Elizabeth Kolbert, and David Finkel; poet, MacArthur awardee, and National Book Critics Circle Award winner Claudia Rankine; Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Viet Thanh Nguyen; and PEN/Faulkner Award winner Brando Skyhorse.

In addition to teaching in FLEX, program faculty also teach in the Honors and Creative Writing programs and in the Office of Civic and Community Engagement.
