The University of Massachusetts, Amherst is a public university that offers degree programs and qualifications in 29 academic disciplines. Since it opened in 1863, UMass Amherst has provided students with diverse and open-minded education opportunities. Also, over the last decade, the university has been one of the most improved US higher education institutions in the US.
In the 1990s, the UMass Amherst campus had major renovations to improve facilities. Some of the recent additions included the Hampshire Dining Common, buildings and facilities for Nursing, Science and Arts. A state-of-the-art track facility and recreation centre were also built during the developments.
UMass Amherst has 52 halls of residence in seven separate areas on campus. All residences have resources, like kitchen areas, recreation rooms, classrooms and television rooms. Various options like shared accommodation and private rooms are also on offer. Also, the university has housing specifically for students with families. Here students have access to essential facilities like laundry and cooking equipment, wifi and enough space for family living.
The university has two libraries with a huge range of physical and online academic resources. First, the W.E.B. Du Bois Library is the main library on campus and it is the tallest research library worldwide. In addition, the Science and Engineering Library caters for students studying these subjects.
The University of Massachusetts, Amherst encourages creative and forward-thinking approaches from its students. Therefore, an open-minded atmosphere on campus gives students room to develop socially and academically.
Students, therefore, have many extracurricular opportunities through clubs, sports, activism and social events. Currently, the establishment runs over 400 clubs online or in-person organisations are also available. Some options range from stand-up comedy, beekeeping, sports and politics.
Campuses
The UMass Amherst campus is in a 1,450-acre area in the Pioneer Valley of western Massachusetts. Due to its unique location, students can participate in many outdoor activities. From hiking to cycling, there is plenty of exploration in Amherst. Also, Amherst is well-known as the birthplace of Emily Dickinson and literary greatness. Students can explore artistic and cultural sites nearby the university campus.
But for a big city experience, Boston is only 90 miles from Amherst, while New York is 175 miles away.
