The University of Bolton dates back to the 19th Century Bolton Mechanics Institute and throughout the 20th Century it had various names. In 1982 it became the Bolton Institute of Higher Education, before finally gaining university status in 2004, making it one of the newer universities in the UK.

It's made big strides since then and was named best in the North West for overall teaching quality and student satisfaction in The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2022. It has also been ranked in the top five universities for student satisfaction in the Guardian as well as top 50 overall.
