BA (Hons) Youth Work

The programme provides you with the platform, skills, experience, knowledge and a qualification to progress a career in the youth and community sector and associated fields. As well as a blend of on campus and online learning, this vocational programme entails 800 hours of work-based learning. Significant time is spent on placement, where you will develop your skills and knowledge by undertaking supervised work with young people aged between 11 and 25 years old. As part of the programme, placements will be spread across a rich diversity of settings in London, Essex and further afield. It is anticipated that there may be a number of placements with Newham Youth Service which announced ‘the biggest expansion in youth services in London for a generation’ in 2019.On-campus sessions will therefore be supplemented with opportunities to learn online and whilst on work placement. You will learn about, ways of communicating, how to practise in a non-discriminatory manner, targeted interventions, leadership, management and fundraising. As such students will gain an understanding of how often society is unfairly structured and how to support individual young people and communities towards a brighter future. You’ll learn reflective practice – essentially, thinking more carefully about situations and will receive plenty of support to help you develop emotional resilience and an ability to work with others to solve problems and make a difference.
