It expanded over the years before becoming the first university to gain a royal charter from Queen Elizabeth II in 1952 two months into her reign. It’s a founding member of the Russell Group and has more than 22,000 students, including 6,500 international students from 135 countries.
It is ranked in the top 1% of universities worldwide at 77th in the QS World University Rankings 2022.
