BSc (Hons) Computing Science and French

However you carry out out everyday functions like cooking, driving or watching television, you are interacting with computers. Our course teaches you the theory and practice of designing, building and analysing such systems and your training will encompass how computers work – programming them to follow our instructions and learning how they fit into their environment. Computing Science courses at Stirling equip you with knowledge of the wide use of computers in business, industry and for personal use. Built around a core of software engineering and development you will learn about Computer Security and Forensics, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Games and Mobile Phone App development, amongst other topics. From day one you will study the broad concerns of computing science: not only how to program computers (in Java) but ‘computational thinking’, the usability and accessibility of user interfaces, and social and professional issues. In your Honours year you will have the chance to pick a number of optional topics, which are regularly updated to be at the cutting edge of computing. These options are often related to research being done at Stirling. Current topics include Computer Security and Forensics, Web Services, Computing and the Brain, Modelling for Complex Systems. French at Stirling is focused on high quality research-led teaching of the language and cultures of the contemporary French-speaking world. Our courses give students an in-depth understanding of language, society and thought across historical and geographical contexts, as well as an opportunity to spend time abroad at a range of exciting partner institutions. Our graduates are dynamic, motivated and flexible. They bring their high-level skills in written and oral communication, translation and intercultural awareness to a wide range of professional contexts. As Language students you will be taught by tutors and lecturers who specialise in the complexities of cultures in places as diverse as metropolitan France, Quebec, the Maghreb and sub-Saharan Africa. And our Language Coordinators, who are highly experienced in the teaching of French as a foreign language, work in close collaboration with our team of Language Assistants to provide in-depth language study throughout your degree. Your degree in French will not only enable you to develop high-level written and spoken linguistic skills, but you will also build an understanding of the histories, societies, literature, cinema and visual cultures of the French-speaking world. You’ll be taught through a combination of lectures and small tutorial groups, with access to our state-of-the-art range of language learning resources through our virtual learning environment and our campus language labs. As a student of French at Stirling you will have a number of opportunities to spend time living, studying and working abroad as part of your degree. On many degrees, you will spend Semester 6 studying abroad at one of our partner universities. We are constantly renewing and expanding our partnerships and they currently include universities across France, as well as in Quebec, Switzerland and Morocco. You might also decide to apply for an English Language Assistantship which would allow you to undertake paid teaching in a school in France or elsewhere in the Francophone world. For Education students, this fulfils the Graduate Teaching Council’s residence requirement but it is an opportunity open to all students on all Languages courses.
