Student Life

The Wellington Institute of Technology & Whitireia New Zealand (WelTec & Whitireia) is well-equipped with facilities for students to take advantage of during their studies. Since hands-on learning is prioritised, classrooms house relevant equipment and utilise the latest technology. Similarly, the library provides convenient access to a variety of resources and multimedia materials. A free bus runs on weekdays to transport students between campuses and there are prayer rooms provided in addition to a childcare centre.


Petone is known for being aesthetic, lined with trendy cafes and boutiques. The area is steeped in history, with many churches along the streets and Petone Wharf remaining one of the last remaining pieces of the area’s rich industrial past. The Hikoikoi Reserve is a park and walkway at the mouth of the Hutt River nearby that even features a golf course for people to enjoy some leisure time. The Petone Rotary Fair is an annual event that draws people from all over the world and gives all money raised to charity.


WelTec & Whitireia has a good working relationship with industry partners so their courses are up-to-date with the best practices to help students get employed. In addition, graduates from the university are well-respected for having studied at WelTec & Whitireia. Iwi partnerships are a big focus for WelTec & Whitireia because they are dedicated to giving back to the community. WelTec started as Petone Technical School in 1904, while Whitireia was founded in 1985.
