MSc Genomics and Precision Medicine

About This Course

The expanding amount and availability of human genetic data, together with the application of cutting-edge genomic analysis technologies, is allowing a more detailed understanding of the links between our genes, our susceptibility to disease and our potential responses to specific treatment therapies. This enhanced level of understanding is, in turn, driving the advance in Personalised Medicine, where clinical treatment decisions are becoming more informed to maximise specific patients responses to and benefit from specific therapy regimes.

Workforces with the specialised knowledge and understanding and key skill sets in application and delivery of the ‘genomic and precision medicine revolution’ are urgently required in key medical, clinical and academic institutions and in industry.

The Bangor GPM program aims to provide an opportunity to develop a fundamental understanding of the platform technologies employed in the collection and analysis of human genomic data and the application of genomic data in research and the clinic and in the importance of ethical, accurate reporting of findings to patients and the public.

The program’s modular design and delivery formats are optimised for students and healthcare professionals and is linked to the Welsh Government all-Wales strategy offering training and education in Genomic and Precision Medicine related subjects to support the development of the clinical, and clinical-associated workforce in Wales.

Research Opportunities

The academics involved with this course have extensive clinical and research links with NHS University Health Boards and other external bodies and companies, which are fully utilised in ensuring that the modules are relevant to the modern clinical, research, academic or industrial environments graduates may enter.

Careers

Through part time or full-time study options, the course will enhance career development opportunities for personal already working in the clinical/healthcare sector and open new routes of employment in academic and industry.

Successful graduates should be well-positioned to deliver support, implementation and development, and research roles in the rapidly expanding field of Genomic Precision Medicine; in medical and clinical institutions, academic institutions and industry.

Successful graduates will understand key genomic technologies and be able to use genomic data and information as part of research strategies, diagnostic, prognostic and treatment pathways and ethical reporting. Students will be able to engage and communicate effectively, with diverse communities, and summarise and disseminate information including test results in oral and written forms to colleagues, patients and the public.
