Semiconductors, batteries, fuel cells and catalysts are essential to our green transition and net zero ambitions, by allowing us to transport, convert, deliver and conserve energy in all aspects of our industrial society. At the intersection of Chemistry and Materials Science, our Chemistry with Materials Chemistry programme provides you with an in-depth understanding of the fundamental theory and practical applications of such materials. While continuing to develop a strong grounding in core chemistry, you will apply your understanding and skills to the modern problems at the forefront of materials science, gaining the conceptual and practical competencies needed to enable a sustainable future. During your studies you will have opportunities for individual advanced project work, collaborative learning, placements, and exploration of frontier topics - guided by our world-leading researchers.

During the first two years of your studies, you will explore core concepts in the fundamental areas of inorganic, organic, physical and analytical chemistry. Your learning will be supported through interactive teaching, workshops and small group activities as well as frequent opportunities to apply key concepts in our sector-leading laboratories - where you will gain individual, practical confidence using specialist computational tools and research-grade instrumentation. Throughout your studies you can tailor your learning by choosing from a variety of optional modules  - including some at the forefront of modern chemical sciences research.

Your understanding and skills will be assessed through a diverse range of authentic activities which will develop your specialist and transferrable skills to prepare you for your future career. To deepen your learning, we will provide you with personalised and comprehensive feedback and formative opportunities on assessed work in various formats.

In your final year you will undertake a substantial piece of meaningful research on a topic which aligns to your interests and career goals. You will also conduct an in-depth literature review on an area of your own personal interest which you may connect to your research project, or diversify into another area of materials chemistry. As you complete your education as a well-rounded materials chemist, you will develop a toolkit of skills, including data fluency, materials design and an understanding of their real-world application.

Designed to provide you with the specialist skills you will need as a professional, modern chemist, our chemistry courses have practical and professional development modules embedded throughout our curriculum. From hands-on experience using specialist computational tools and research-grade instrumentation in our sector-leading laboratory facilities, to dedicated career-focused sessions and authentic assessments, we will provide you with the knowledge, tools and connections to develop a strong foundation for your future career.

At Keele we're leading the sector in sustainability, not just in our ambitions to become carbon neutral by 2030 but also through our teaching and our ground-breaking research into climate change and renewable technologies. In 2021 we were awarded the prestigious title of Global Sustainability Institution of the Year (International Green Gown Awards, 2021).

Within the School of Chemical and Physical Sciences we promote sustainability through our teaching to raise awareness of the environmental issues within chemistry. On the programme you will explore how chemistry is placed within the social, political and economic context of 'the real world' with a heavy emphasis on environmental sustainability and the implications for humanity. You will also discover how chemistry associated with industrial processes has changed to become more sustainable and how it must continue to change to further this progress.
