MSc by Research Environmental Science
You will explore key research methodologies, skills, approaches and debates relevant to your field of study through a compulsory research skills module and one elective module selected to align with your research interests.
The independent research project, which is the major component of this programme, may involve working with a partner organisation and it may therefore have an applied focus or contribute to the work of that organisation. The research project is developed in collaboration with two academic supervisors from the School of Geography. Our current list of suggested projects and supervisor contact details can be found on our project page. You are also welcome to approach a member of academic staff with your own project idea. Please find staff details on the academic contact us page. The research project report is submitted in the form of a draft manuscript with supplementary material as appropriate to a relevant, peer-reviewed journal in your field.
Your taught modules and research project will provide you with a range of transferable skills suitable for further research and employment, including field and laboratory skills, data modelling, statistical analysis, project management and critical review and evaluation.
Your application must include a research proposal for your project, developed in collaboration with two potential supervisors. Please see our guidance on writing your proposal by clicking here: MSc Environmental Science by Research Proposal Guidance [PDF 140KB] Before submitting your application, please contact a relevant supervisor in the school to discuss your ideas and secure their agreement in principle to supervise the project. When you submit your application, please include written confirmation from your potential supervisors that they are able to supervise the project (e.g. an email). Your application cannot be considered until we receive these elements.
