The department offers a wide variety of coursework, with an emphasis on cultural, biological, and archaeological anthropology. The curriculum provides foundations in the study of human origins and development, varieties of human culture, and the cultural and social complexities of the human species.

Anthropology brings together thought and inquiry from across the curriculum. It also develops a variety of research and writing skills, such as trained observation, interviewing, film, photography, and use of GIS and other advanced research technologies. For these reasons, it serves as a gateway to multiple professions. Some are in anthropology and archaeology, such as conducting ethnographic research, leading archaeological digs, conducting biological and linguistic research in laboratories, or working for business, government, media, NGOs, or nonprofit organizations. Other careers lie in closely allied fields like medicine, education, and social work.
