Are you ready to play a role in protecting and maintaining New Zealand's wonderful outdoor environment and range of indigenous and introduced species?

If you enjoyed the level 5 Environmental Management (Terrestrial) course, you'll find plenty to excite you in this second year. The level 6 diploma will set you up with more in-depth skills and knowledge and lead you into advanced study to gain your degree. You build on your knowledge of botany, terrestrial science, ecology and sustainability, and continue your learning in a choice of elective papers in geology, biosecurity or aquaculture.

There's a strong focus on research and environmental reporting and monitoring, meaning you get the opportunity to work alongside industry and apply your skills in real-world surveying, sampling and monitoring projects. You also learn how to design research and manage data, and understand the regulatory environment.

Depending on your choice of subjects, you could be taking off to remote South Island locations, or even Borneo* to study unique environments, monitor ecosystems or survey indigenous species. Have a look at the awesome field trips our students have taken over the last few years.

Students gain employment in a number of exciting areas. Or, open up more career opportunities for yourself by moving into the third year of the Bachelor of Science with the University of Waikato here at Toi Ohomai. You may even decide to continue on further to complete your Masters and PhD.

Environmental sustainability is crucial to our global decision-making. Sharp, enthusiastic graduates, who understand marine or terrestrial environments and how they are influenced by human activities, are essential to support informed environmental management now and in the future.

Upon successfully completing the requirements you'll receive the award of:

  • New Zealand Diploma in Environmental Management (Terrestrial) (Level 6)
