Course overview
Product Design is a rapidly developing area of design, with new processes emerging in response to new materials, technologies, ecology issues and economic development. Product Design at Chester is a hands-on experience, set in a welcoming studio environment with ample tutor contact time and technical support.

The programme places importance on developing your idea generation and experimentation through physical and digital making skills, to produce creative and imaginative design solutions. We have a playful approach to media, materials and processes within a friendly creative community, all aimed at helping you develop your individuality as you progress through the programme. On a more cerebral level, you will consider the social, economic and ethical concerns relating to the production of designed objects and user experiences.
We have excellent links with commercial product businesses such as Evoke Creative, Unilever, Zest for Leisure and Silver Lining all of which enable us to set live briefs and work alongside industry professionals. With industry standard CAD facilities and a new 3D printing suite, alongside traditional workshop facilities we are able to prototype product solutions to a professional standard.
We will help you acquire the confidence to push the boundaries of this exciting and constantly developing area and explore the entrepreneurial possibilities of your ideas within the creative economy.
Job prospects
Graduates from the Product Design programme are equipped to work in a variety of career paths as product design is required in a wide range of manufacturing industries. There are specific product design agencies throughout the UK but most importantly any company bringing new ideas into development will require a product designer’s skills in their team.
