BSc/BA (Hons) Natural Hazard Management (Combined)
Our BSc Combined Honours Natural Hazard Management (NHM) course explores both environmental and social dimensions of disasters at a range of scales from global to local. By understanding hazard processes, and learning how to assess their impacts, monitor changes and communicate effectively for crisis response, you will develop the knowledge and skills required to address local and global hazard management challenges.
In a vibrant, research active and friendly department, which adopts contemporary, technology-based and innovative approaches to learning, you will develop the knowledge, skills and understanding required by employers seeking ‘change-ready’, resilient and confident graduates.
Our NHM course provides you with the opportunity to take a ‘holistic’ approach to the study of hazards, focusing on the physical, socio-economic and political processes that create conditions of vulnerability, and developing your knowledge of key priorities for effective risk reduction strategies.
Our proximity to the physical (coasts, rivers, mountains), socio-economic and political hubs (Manchester, Liverpool) on our doorstep enables us to incorporate fieldwork and field-based research throughout our programme. In addition to UK-based residential fieldwork (Year 1), we offer international fieldwork opportunities to Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples, Italy (Year 3) to study volcanic hazard management and emergency planning.
The course also provides you with opportunities to gain hands-on practical (field and laboratory) experience of hazard assessment in UK and overseas settings. You will develop your knowledge, skills, expertise, and confidence through a wide range of innovative assignments which use Geospatial Information Systems (GIS), Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and Remote Sensing (RS) to evaluate/manage natural hazards and risk.
We also provide an invaluable opportunity for you to gain formal workplace experience by working in an external organisation as a part of a full-time placement. Our graduating students gain professional employment in a wide range of sectors, allowing them to apply their knowledge and skills to drive change on the issues that matter to them.
Scholarship Information
Applicants to our programmes who are of Black or mixed Black heritage may be able to apply for ESRI’s Geospatial Scholarship Fund
