Education and learning in all its forms has the power to enable individuals, communities, institutions and society to change and transform.

The BA Education Studies is an innovative programme, which offers opportunities to tailor your degree towards a specific career interest should you wish. Alongside the central programme there are three optional pathways, Youth and Community Work (YCW), Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and Special Educational Needs, Disability and Inclusion (SENDI) with the additional opportunity to create a bespoke programme from the available modules. Education Studies at Hull is Joint 10th Overall in UK †.

This critical study of educational processes, systems and approaches is situated within cultural, societal and political contexts. You will be engaged with learning spaces and places in and beyond formal educational settings, in an approach that will challenge your assumptions of what education is and where it takes place. Through engagement with real-world experiences and by examining contemporary issues, you will be equipped with the skills required to be agents of change in a complex and ever evolving educational landscape.

Make a difference to the lives of children, young people, adults and communities. Education is at the heart of creating more fair and equal societies. Tailor your degree through our new optional pathways and build your experience through work placements and project based learning:

Special Educational Needs, Disability and Inclusion (SENDI)

Special Education Needs, Disability and Inclusion (SENDI) centres upon the exclusion, discrimination, and barriers to learning through the restructuring of cultures, policies and practices. This pathway offers the possibility to challenge stereotypical thinking; interrogate inequality in education and society; value diversity; develop inclusive practices and support for those with SEND; and view differences between children and adults as resources for learning.

Youth and Community Work (YCW)

Students choosing this pathway will have the opportunity to gain an honours degree AND the professional JNC qualification in Youth Work. Combining academic and professional studies will give you increased graduate employability across a range of youth and community settings. On the course you will build specialist knowledge and skills in informal education, which promotes participatory approaches to engagement with young people and communities, working towards inclusion, social justice and equity for all. Professional practice placements on this pathway will enable you to collectively bring about positive social change in ways that make a difference and have social impact throughout your studies and beyond.

Teaching English for Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

With the use, status and teaching of English language at the forefront of global interaction, this pathway provides students with the opportunity to develop and integrate key English language teaching and academic knowledge alongside practical and varied community-based teaching experience. Moreover, students can undertake a supported, home or overseas placement in the area of TESOL at Level 5, whilst also working towards an embedded and highly desirable, nationally and internationally recognised Trinity Cert TESOL teaching qualification as part of their studies.
