EngD EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Resilient Decarbonised Fuel Energy Systems
Nottingham and its partners in this CDT (Cardiff and Sheffield) have world-leading experimental and computational facilities which can be used to explore how to how the future energy world will operate without fossil fuels and how that transition can be made quickly and safely. We adopt the philosophy that such developments will depend on a broad range of technologies and on public and societal acceptance and we encourage collaborative research between all these disciplines.
You will undertake a structured training programme for the first year of your research which will include advanced technical skills of relevance to your research topic plus more general research, planning, communication and life skills. You will also work with your industrial sponsor during this time.
This training will be done as part of a cohort of students across the academic institutions involved and across the years of the CDT to allow exchange of ideas and to create a long-lasting network of contacts.
At the end of this year, you will produce a literature review for your research topic (which is agreed with your sponsor) and a research plan for how the work will be delivered. You will then carry out that research over the next three years during which time you will continue to take part in cohort activities from time to time to allow you to maintain relationships with your colleagues. Your project may be based at the University, with your sponsor or split between the two.
