Explore key debates and issues in contemporary anthropology.Social anthropology explores the diversity and complexity of human societies in both Western and non-Western contexts. This combined honours degree will provide an excellent insight into how people live and how society is structured in different cultures.Why do big pharmaceutical companies promote the medicalisation of contemporary societies? Why are so many people on anti-depressants in the current day and age? These are some of the questions you might consider on this course.More generally, the course focuses on classic themes such as kinship, witchcraft or indigenous cosmologies, as well as on the relationship between culture and biology, and gender and sexuality. The anthropology of science and the study of human-animal relations are also explored in considerable depth.Study with us and you’ll join a highly dynamic course, taught by staff engaged in world-class research. We run some of the UK’s most innovative modules such as ‘Being Human’, which explores human evolution from biological and cultural perspectives, and ‘Fieldwork: Theory, Practice and Product’ where experienced anthropologists explain how a project reaches fruition, including how to locate areas of interest within existing theoretical debates.
