York is an international leader in the study of the literature, culture and history from the late 17th century to the early 19th century.

Our research brings local, national and global perspectives to bear on a vibrant period of literary history, covering a diverse range of writers across all genres.

We have expertise in themes such as fashion and material culture, empire and Orientalism, radical print culture, science and medicine, Gothic writing, urban culture, gender, religion and women's writing, visual culture, and theatre and sociability.

Centre for Eighteenth Century Studies

Staff belonging to our School are also members of the interdisciplinary Centre for Eighteenth Century Studies.

The Centre draws staff from across the University together to engage in research on 18th-century culture, literature, art, politics and society.
