Given that the Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic) is administered by one of the world’s leading textbook publishers, it should come as no surprise that there are plenty of really helpful books for PTE exam preparation.

The exam is one of a number of English language assessment tests which international students can take to gain a place at university.

Though it’s not as well known as the likes of TOEFL and IELTS, PTE is quickly gaining repute and is accepted by the majority of universities in the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.

In Canada and the USA, PTE Academic is becoming more widely accepted, but it’s not common-place quite yet.

In this article we’ve taken a look at some of the most popular PTE academic books and preparation material, and made some recommendations for the best ones.

1. The Official Guide to PTE Academic

There’s no better place to start when talking about the best PTE books than the OFFICIAL guide, made by the examiners themselves.

The Official Guide to PTE Academic provides a comprehensive introduction and run-through of the entire exam, from scoring breakdowns, to academic term definitions, to skill building exercises specific to PTE test preparation.

The book also comes with access to a stock of hundreds of online questions and sample answers!

2. Expert PTE Academic Coursebook B1 & B2

A slightly more challenging PTE preparation book for those at a B1 or B2 level, this coursebook contains loads of higher level tasks which are likely to come up in the exam itself.

While it covers a lot of the same ground as the official guide (mentioned above), it also includes a lot of useful strategies for getting as high a score as you can.

The thing we love about it is that it also gives you access to Pearson’s “My English Lab”, which is a really useful online learning portal.

3. PTE Academic Practice Test Plus – Volume 1 and 2

Two separate books with the same theme, so we’ve put them together to not waste words.

The PTE Academic Practice Test Plus is exactly what it says on the cover - a treasure trove of real past exam questions, including access to recorded material for listening tasks.

There are also score guides, answer keys, as well as sample answers with examiner comments!

4. Wiley’s PTE Advantage For The Academic Module (WIND)

Written with more of a focus on helping Indian students with the PTE exam, Wiley’s is a great option.

It’s nicely structured and easy to follow. It contains tonnes of tips, practice questions and answers, and also really nicely breaks down the structure of the exam itself.

The best thing? The book comes with access to a FREE online PTE academic test, as well as three practice tests with answers.

5. PTE Academic Official Vocabulary 2020-2021

Boosting your vocabulary is always a great way of ensuring a higher PTE test score!

With so many words in the world, it would be a great idea to check out the official vocabulary you might come across and impress with.

Simply put, this helpful PTE preparation book is filled with the most important words that you need to know to successfully complete the speaking and writing/essay part of PTE Academic.

6. Bonus: The PTE Academic Official Preparation App

Okay it’s not a book, but it’s 2021 guys - there’s an app for just about everything!

The PTE Academic Official Preparation App is free to download, and it lets you discover all you need to know about what to expect from the test (and the test centre), and information on the 20 different types of questions.

There are interactive questions to practice with, and the answers are provided whether you’re on or offline. As well as this, there are loads of great resources and ‘how to’ guides to help improve your performance.

Finally, it features a great study planner which allows you to watch your progress, and it even sends you little helpful practice suggestions every day!
