About This Course

The Masters by Research programme is embedded in the ‘Implement@Bangor’ which has a particular focus on studying and undertaking implementation, with particular attention to service improvement, quality assurance and the application of implementation to increase the use of evidence in practice. ‘Implement@Bangor’ also benefits from being part of the distinctive range of multidisciplinary expertise within the Bangor Institute of Health and Medical Research (BIHMR) that will support students on the programme. As part of the research centre there is a vibrant group of multidisciplinary postgraduate research projects examining a wide range of areas linked to implementation science. The Masters by Research programme will provide a dedicated route for high calibre students who want to carry out clinical, health or social care research focused on implementation science. This includes a focusing on a range of implementation approaches, realist inquiry and engagement in a range of health services research. ‘Implement@Bangor’ centres on using a range of implementation approaches, including Realist Evaluation and Realist Review. Its aim is to create knowledge of what works and why. This underpins the postgraduate programme.

Research Opportunities

‘Implement@Bangor’ and the Bangor Institute of Health and Medical Research (BIHMR) have partnership arrangements with a range of health and social care organisations, including the NHS, Local Authorities and industry. This enables postgraduate researchers to establish links within an applied context.

Course Structure

The MSc by Research is available for full time (1 year) or part time (2 year) study on-campus or via distance learning from within the UK or internationally. The course requires the student to undertake a substantial piece of independent research at the cutting edge of implementation (180 credits at Level 7).

There will be opportunities to undertake taught modules at postgraduate level (available also as e-Learning courses) as well as attend workshops and courses provided for postgraduate research students at Implement@Bangor, the Bangor Institute of Health and Medical Research (BIHMR) and the University’s Doctoral School. Any additional taught modules and courses will not count as credits towards this or any other qualification but, if identified as being of developmental value by the student and the supervisory team, will provide the extra skills and knowledge needed to undertake postgraduate research.
