About this Course

Our Welsh MA is a long-standing and successful course that combines a practical foundation in postgraduate training and research with the opportunity to focus on a specific and optional area of ??study. The MA course has its own unique characteristics, but also provides the basis for a PhD project in providing training and thematic context.

The MA scheme we offer is tailored to individual students' purposes and interests and includes an academic year of full-time study. During that year, the student will be under the direction of various members of the School's staff and submit regular assignments. Before the end of the calendar year, the student will be required to submit a dissertation of up to 20,000 words. Recent MA essays presented at the School include works by the writers Aled Islwyn, R. Gerallt Jones, Meic Povey, Bryan Martin Davies, Kate Roberts Girls, and an edition of one of Twm o'r Nant's Interludes.

Course Content

What will you study on this course?

You are studying for an MA in Welsh according to the traditional method of essays and dissertations. The first part consists of three course essays (3 x 4,000-6,000 words) that should demonstrate a sound grasp of the broad features of your chosen area of ??study; the second part is the dissertation (20,000 words) which contains original research and is partly based on primary material. During Semester 1 you will also undertake an induction course on research methodology in the field of Welsh.

A major strength of our MA course is its flexibility and the fact that it allows free choice of subjects within the broad boundaries of the discipline. If your main interest is medieval Welsh literature - the Gododdin, the Mabinogion, or Dafydd ap Gwilym, for example - your course will be planned and tailored accordingly and you will have a dedicated course supervisor, who will specialist in your chosen field of study. Alternatively, if you want to study modern Welsh literature and culture, or aspects relating to the language itself, we can cater for your academic interests. Students wishing to embark on a structured MA course of a comparative nature may be very welcome, linking the study of Welsh with areas such as English literature, medieval studies, European languages, language revitalization,

Careers

In areas as diverse as education, language planning, media and journalism, the civil service, the heritage industry, public relations and marketing, there is a strong demand for graduates who have Welsh language ability and the ability to work in a bilingual environment.

You will gain a range of transferable skills, which will enable you to pursue a variety of career paths, including all those normally associated with Humanities graduates. If you want to pursue academic interests you will have a solid foundation on which to go on to do a PhD.
