Master of Philosophy (MPhil) is an excellent precursor to a PhD and undertaking this kind of two-year course with the Faculty of Media & Communication will give you access to experts and resources in a wide range of media and communications fields, as well as law.

The research strategy in the faculty is aligned with Bournemouth University’s 2025 vision and strategic plan; a plan that stresses real-world impact, the enrichment of society and the economy, and advancing knowledge to significantly influence challenges world-wide.

Research projects within the faculty have had a significant impact on a number of worldwide issues including digital and technological futures; The implications of 3D printing for Intellectual Property, Afterglow, The impact of digital technologies on readers and reading and global security; Tear gas, policing and human rights.

There is strong potential for collaborative research that sees you crossing boundaries both within the sector and across all of our faculties, allowing you to deliver insightful and impactful research.

Course details

You can be awarded a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) after critically investigating and evaluating an approved topic and demonstrating an understanding of research methods appropriate to your chosen field. You’ll be expected to present and defend a thesis and/or practical element, by viva voce (oral examination), to the satisfaction of the examiners. You can register to study for an MPhil on a full-time or part-time basis.

The main focus of an MPhil is to carry out a unique research project, within any research area that is covered by one of our eight research themes. These involve cross-faculty collaboration and present an excellent opportunity to work on an impactful research project.
