MA Social Work

Overview

Social work is a rewarding profession which enables you to work with and support individuals, families and communities of all ages who face difficulties or distress in their lives.

Your role is to assist them in developing practical strategies to improve their situations and make a positive difference – protecting the vulnerable from harm and abuse or supporting people to live independently. It allows you to give something back to society.

Currently accredited by Social Work England, our MA was developed in line with government recommendations in response to the demand for a highly skilled workforce. Recognised internationally, the British social work qualification allows you to apply to register for practice as a professional social worker on completion, working for local government, voluntary and third sector organisations, charities or NGOs (additional fees may apply).

Upon graduation you will have the opportunity to apply to work in any area of social work, rather than simply qualifying for one particular area, such as childcare or mental health – a distinct advantage giving you greater flexibility in your career choices.

You will undertake two placements of 70 days and 100 days (sourced by the university). As well as providing invaluable experience, this 170 days is a requirement to apply to register as a social worker on successful completion of the course.

Grounded in practice, this course will enable you to build on your existing academic, work and life experiences in order to achieve the professional social work qualification, as well as gain a master’s level degree to help you stand out to employers.

Career prospects

Graduates from social work qualifying programmes at Coventry University have excellent career prospects in the caring professions, supported by our close links with local employer partners, who are actively involved in the design, delivery and assessment of the programme.

There remains to be healthy employment rates in the local area for qualified local authority social workers, however past graduates have also gone on to wider range of positions in the NHS and voluntary sector.
