BSc (Hons) Geology (Applied Geophysics) with International or Placement Year

Geology is the science that investigates how the Earth was formed, how life arose and evolved, why the Earth looks like it does today, what resources it contains and how we can find them. The discipline draws on knowledge from many different aspects of science such as chemistry, biology, and physics as well as other subjects such as geography and environmental science. Our society is based on the work of geologists in the hunt for natural resources for energy and materials for modern living. Geologists are likely to be in high demand for years to come due to the continuous evolution of modern societies.

Geophysics is a practical subject with applied problem-solving laboratory classes and field courses where you will learn how to collect, process and interpret geophysical data, and explore for future geological resources. This specialist course focuses particularly on applied geophysical research skills and you will learn to carry out your own research using specialist geophysical software and equipment. You will also examine the uses of geophysics in geotechnics, ground engineering, geoforensics and environmental monitoring. There is a strong emphasis on developing fieldwork, laboratory, communication and applied research skills.
