COURSE OVERVIEW

Studying a Welsh degree in language, law and policy provides an exciting opportunity to examine contemporary issues such as language rights and the legal status of the Welsh language. This is an unique and innovative qualification which responds to Welsh Government priorities and reflects employers’ requirements.

You will discuss issues such as devolution and the Welsh language; language and education; language planning; multiculturalism and the Welsh language; the relationship between language and society. Although the main focus will be the Welsh experience, the international context is also examined.

There’s now a high demand for graduates who understand Welsh law and policy, and who have sophisticated communication skills. The Welsh Language Commissioner says: "There is currently significant demand in the areas of care and health, public administration, police forces and third sector organisations. This course is to be welcomed as a step towards creating a future workforce.” Studying this Welsh degree programme will provide you with opportunities to combine academic studies with practical employability skills for the workplace.

The Department has specialists in language planning, social linguistics, law and regulation. You will therefore be taught by lecturers who advise and work with the Welsh government on issues such as language planning and policy.
