MA Education (Trauma Informed Practice)

Course overview:

You develop the professional skills and knowledge appropriate to your area of educational interest, so you can continue your professional, educational and personal development by consolidating, enhancing and extending your disciplinary expertise, experience and abilities.

The course requires high levels of personal responsibility and self-direction, and you work with complex knowledge, theory and concepts appropriate to postgraduate study. Specifically, the programme aims to:

  • enable you to focus on a particular aspect of education (trauma-informed practice) that will be of value to your professional development
  • develop your capacity to operate as reflective professionals in trauma-informed educational settings
  • enhance opportunities for you to consider your professional development in order to consolidate previous learning to inform future career paths
  • enable you to plan, manage and evaluate your own learning as independent lifelong learners
  • enable you to become confident, critical, creative, adaptable, articulate and aspiring through
  • develop your knowledge and understanding of research methods appropriate to postgraduate study and professional practice

These aims are integrated across the whole programme and synthesised in your final dissertation.

How you learn:

A range of learning and teaching methods are used so that the learning outcomes can be explored in-depth in a variety of ways. Lectures will provide the information that will be built on in workshops and seminars where a more interactive and exploratory approach will be taken. You will be able to consider your own practice and reflect in groups and individually in order to apply theory to practice. Tutorials will be available with a member of the course team on some modules and with your designated personal tutor throughout the course. You are expected to engage in independent study and are supported to investigate aspects of educational practice. There will be the opportunity for students to work together outside of the face-to-face sessions through the use of the virtual learning environment where there will be additional information and guidance and discussion boards for synchronous and asynchronous dialogue.

How you are assessed:

The course has adopted a range of assessment methods that allow you to take different approaches to exploring the learning outcomes and demonstrate your knowledge and understanding and postgraduate skills in a variety of ways. These include written assignments, a literature review, a debate, a presentation, a research proposal and a dissertation.
