BA (Hons) History, Literature and Culture

This course is for students who want to examine some of the most pressing issues of our time – such as gender, race and class – and understand how history and literature have influenced our perceptions of the world. You will be looking at topics including the politics of race and colonialism; whether gender has worked to marginalise or empower writers and activists; and the role culture such as novels and films play in relation to power. Guided by an expert staff team, you will interrogate past and present societies, learning how political responses to inequalities have shaped our accepted ideas. You will engage with a range of literature that challenges what is supposedly 'normal.’Our class sizes are small to encourage discussion but you will be part of a vibrant community of humanities courses. As well as your timetabled lectures, we have a full schedule of events where we welcome guest speakers who come to participate in debates around subjects such as contemporary philosophy, politics and ethics.
