BA (Hons) Education (including a Foundation Year)

Do you want to have an impact on the world around you? If so, our BA Education is the course that will give you the skills and knowledge to do this. Our experienced and accessible course tutors will support you in gaining an excellent understanding of the sociology, psychology and philosophy of education and how this relates to real life practice. This highly practical course has placements in each year, which will enable you to relate theory to practice and gain transferable hands-on skills.

This course offers the following optional pathway, allowing you to focus your studies on your particular area of interest:

  • Inclusion, Diversity and Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

"Our collaboration aims to build an Education community and social connections between new students from the very beginning of the course. These social collaborations form the foundation to collectively build enjoyable learning experiences, which will involve an engagement throughout each year of study with organisations, practitioners and participants operating within a variety of education settings. We feel that this is an important part of the learning process as an Education student, and helps to bring to life and meaningfully connect with subject specific issues to enable critical examination of contemporary education and society." Nick Ponsillo, Director of the Philip Barker Centre

Our BA in Education will build on current practice and research in the Department, providing you with in-depth knowledge and understanding of education drawing on the disciplines of sociology, philosophy, psychology, political science, and history, to enable you to develop knowledge and skills in the academic study of education. The use of outside speakers on the course, who are experts in the field and practitioners in a variety of educational disciplines, helps to demonstrate education studies in a real-world context.

The option to take a pathway focusing on Inclusion, Diversity and SEND enables you to develop an understanding of a growing area of interest in the field of education.

Embedded at the heart of the course is the emphasis on employability skills, ensuring that you will be equipped to enter a diverse range of careers, both directly from the course as a graduate professional and with further study at postgraduate level.

Our commitment goes beyond your undergraduate studies. Subject to achieving a 2:1 in your undergraduate degree, you will benefit from a guaranteed interview on one of our postgraduate teacher training courses and a range of other courses that will allow you to specialise in areas such as special educational needs, leadership and creativity, as well as pursuing research interests.
