BA (Hons) Geography with a Year Abroad

With a BA Geography degree from the University of Chester (accredited by the Royal Geographical Society), you will gain the knowledge and skills to tackle global priority issues such as climate crisis response, social inequality and exclusion, rising poverty and food insecurity. Amid a vibrant, research active and friendly department, which adopts innovative technology-informed approaches to learning, you will explore the dynamic relationships that shape people and place. We want you to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding sought by graduate employers, that will enable you to influence change and play your part in creating a sustainable future for all.

Our courses are ranked 8th in the UK for Student Satisfaction, in the top 20 for graduate prospects (Complete University Guide, 2022), and are accredited by the Royal Geographical Society.

Our BA Geography course focuses primarily on human geographical themes allowing you to explore places, understand environments, and influence change.

Our proximity to the natural, social and cultural landscapes on our doorstep enables us to incorporate fieldwork throughout our course, so that you can explore key issues first-hand. In addition to UK-based residential fieldwork in North Wales, we offer international fieldwork opportunities in Spain and New York.

This course provides the flexibility to allow you to explore and understand the issues and environments that you care about. You can develop specialisms in distinctive areas of human geography (e.g. the principles of sustainable practice, geopolitics, and the role of digital technology in shaping places) but also, if you wish, incorporate complementary elements of physical geography.

It also equips you to make a difference. We embed a wide-range of transferable, employment-related skills throughout, including GIS and remote sensing, social science research methods, big data analysis, critical thinking and problem-solving, and we provide an invaluable opportunity for you to gain formal workplace experience in an external organisation as part of a full-time placement.
