Focus on the human processes that have shaped today’s world, and do this both inside and outside of the lecture theatre.

Course overview

Human geographical enquiry provides insights into the processes that shape our societies, our relationships with each other, and with nature and the environment. You will examine the spatial dynamics of human behaviour through subjects such as climate change, sustainability, and global politics, and explore the ways in which digital technologies are reshaping society, space and place. We use distinctive and innovative approaches to learning to ensure that you have opportunity to develop knowledge and skills relevant to today’s employers.

The flexibility of the course allows you to specialise in a range of human geography sub-disciplines but with the option to study physical geography – so you can tailor your course to suit your interests. Opportunities for travel to a variety of fieldwork destinations in the UK and abroad, plus virtual fieldwork, will enhance your understanding of places and spaces while this form of experiential learning allows you to apply social science and digital research methods, including GIS.

Assessment

The majority of assessment is through continuous coursework assignments, complemented by some end-of-module examinations. The Department engages in a wide variety of innovative coursework assignments, including podcasting, oral presentations/posters, briefing papers, consultancy reports and essays.

The knowledge, skills and understanding you will gain during the course will allow you to pursue a wide range of careers. Our graduates work in professions across a range of sectors, including environmental management, consultancy, teaching, town planning, renewable energy, sustainability, flood risk management and surveying. Some of our graduates continue their studies and go on to gain PhDs, Master's degrees and professional qualifications.
