BSc (Hons) Physics (including a Foundation Year)

Discover more about fundamental science and modern applications as you explore physics in a broad range of modules that combine research-informed teaching with industry-relevant laboratory equipment.

Course overview

Physics is the fundamental science that underpins much of the technology we see around us. Modern communications, transport and energy systems all originate from advances in our understanding of physics. Our Physics Course includes a wide range of research-informed modules, from optics and thermodynamics to quantum mechanics, microscopy and nuclear physics. Our modules combine scientific investigation in terms of theory and modelling, with hands-on, inquiry-based laboratory sessions using modern equipment. The course is taught at Thornton Science Park, where you will be given the opportunity to work alongside our industrial partners via a wide range of summer placements, internships or an optional year industrial placement between the second and third year of study.

Why study this course with us?

Our Physics BSc programme is recognised by the Institute of Physics (IOP) and prepares you for a challenging yet rewarding career in science.

A high proportion of your time will be spent in our modern laboratory facilities, equipped with industry-standard and research-quality instrumentation. Here, you will acquire the necessary laboratory and practical skills to supplement your scientific and technical knowledge.

At Thornton Science Park, you will acquire transferable skills such as critical thinking, problem solving and communication skills. Coupled with familiarity with scientific instrumentation, understanding of the laws that govern the physical world and competency in applied mathematics, these will be of constant benefit as you aspire to develop your future career.

Teaching methods

Course material is presented in lectures, reinforced by tutorials and problem-based learning. Learning material is also available electronically, for private study. Laboratory classes form an integral part of the learning environment and are key to the structure of the course.

Assessment

Assessment is by examination and coursework, including laboratory reports and the extended project report, as well as tutorial problems.

Job prospects

Our BSc Physics programme promotes inter-disciplinary science and places specific weight on employability as we focus on the science behind current and emerging technologies. Our physics graduates enjoy a wide range of career options such as working in industrial and commercial companies, research associations, central and local government, education, consulting, even finance and the stock market as a result of their mathematical skills.

Specific occupations directly related to your degree, or where your degree would be useful, include: Research scientist, Laboratory supervisor or manager, Product developer, Materials scientist, Project manager, Technical sales consultant, Science journalist or writer, School science teacher, Further or Higher Education lecturer.
