EngD Non Destructive Evaluation

The Research Centre in Nondestructive Evaluation (RCNDE) is an EPSRC-sponsored collaboration between industry and academia to coordinate research into Non-destructive evaluation (NDE) technologies, and to ensure research topics are relevant to the medium to longer-term needs of industry. The centre is sponsored by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), is a collaborative venture involving, Bath, Bristol, Imperial College London, Nottingham, Strathclyde and Warwick universities as well as a range of industrial partners. Industrial partners in the ENGd include large companies such as Airbus; NNL; BAE Systems; BP; EDF, E-ON, Network Rail; RWE; Npower; Rolls-Royce; Serco; Shell; QinetiQ; and Renishaw. There are also a similar number of smaller companies involved. Successful candidates work closely with their chosen sponsor, normally carrying out the majority of project work at that company.

Non-Destructive evaluation (NDE) technologies are crucial to achieving greater integrity and safety performance across all aspects of engineering and is fast becoming a fully integrated part of the engineering life cycle.

Research encompass a broad range of technical disciplines, and additional academic collaborations ensure gaps in technology and expertise are filled. Industrial membership is open to all organisations, and is primarily intended for industries in which NDE plays an important role for:

The EngD is aimed at both new graduates and those who have already worked in industry. The four year doctorate programme combines advanced knowledge and professional development training modules with company-based research. The research may comprise of a single project or a series of linked projects relating to advanced NDE technology.
