BSc (Hons) Physics with Medical Physics

University of Sheffield

This course gives you a grounding in the fundamentals, with a focus on medical applications such as ECG, X-ray technology and magnetic resonance imaging. The medical physics modules are taught by a specialist group in the Department of Cardiovascular Science, which provides day-to-day clinical services to the NHS. There are plenty of opportunities for fieldwork: investigating dark matter 1km underground at Boulby Mine, or 2,400m above sea level at an observatory in the Canary Islands. We also send students to CERN in Geneva, for work placements and visits. The three-year BSc focuses on the fundamental knowledge and skills every physicist needs. If you’re interested in a research career, you might want to consider the four-year MPhys, which includes more research experience and the chance to study some topics in greater depth. Many of our graduates become research scientists in academia and industry. Others go into aerospace, telecommunications, defence and energy. Employers include Ernst & Young, BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, Toshiba and the Home Office.
