Bachelor of Fine Arts Media and Communication Studies

UFV offers a minor and extended minor in Media and Communication Studies as part of the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.

Learn about the complex relationships between media, communication, and society, and gain insight into a variety of topics such as the history of communication, advertising, music, journalism, digital design, and artistic expression.

In your first and second year, you are introduced into communication theory and discuss the role media plays in the lives of Canadians. You also become familiar in social research methodology, and examine topics ranging from public relations and advertising to journalism in Canada.

In your third and fourth year, you are exposed to issues relating to the design and distribution of online media, and investigate theories of aesthetics, identity, and subcultures in areas such as art, film, music, and photography.

By the end of the program, you are able to critically analyze contemporary artistic expression and cultural representations and have gained a deep understanding of how people engage with media, adding a new set of skills to complement your creative practice.

Volunteer with CIVL, UFV's campus radio station. Help with various community music events, develop and edit radio promotions, or even host your own show to be broadcasted across the Fraser Valley! Check out the CIVL studio in the SUB (S2109) or sign up for CIVL volunteer opportunities online.

Become a volunteer or paid contributor for the Cascade, UFV's campus newspaper. Visit the Cascade website or drop by their office in the SUB.

Gain a competitive edge after graduation and apply your classroom learning through co-op job placements. Co-op jobs help you develop the skills to build a résumé, expand your professional network, and earn money. You can work in a four-, eight-, or twelve-month work term, full-time or part-time, and can declare co-op as an option on your transcript. Attend a co-op info session or drop in at the Career Centre located in the SUB, room S3123.
