MEd Education

Sacred Heart University’s flexible, online master’s program in education is particularly well-suited for working professionals. Both new and experienced teachers will benefit from flexible course options supported by state-of-the-art technology and expert faculty who provide outstanding instruction and feedback to students. Sacred Heart’s Master of Education (MEd) is open to applicants who already hold a teacher certification from any state.

Designed for the classroom teacher, Sacred Heart’s MEd consists of 30 credits with two endorsement areas to choose from. Upon completion of the program, students can apply for cross endorsement in special education or earn their 102 Remedial Reading and Language Arts Specialist Certification*.

The literacy endorsement positions graduates to influence reading programs and literacy curriculum in elevated teaching roles, in addition to careers in remedial reading and language arts specialization. Graduates will be able to address the individual needs of students across all populations and those with a 102 certification can provide interpretation of student assessment data across all aspects of literacy, skill and grade level. Additionally, certified teachers are an invaluable resource to school districts and institutions, having the ability to utilize data to create schoolwide improvement plans and to deliver professional development in how data can inform instruction.

Teachers with 102 certification are able to discuss a variety of research-based strategies as they collaborate in design intervention to address student learning needs. Certified teachers know how to design:

*Candidates are eligible to apply for state certification (102) after the successful completion of Master of Education in literacy coursework and 30 months of successful classroom experience working under a teaching certificate.

Program completion will equip graduates with the skills to plan, deliver and assess instruction for students with high incidence exceptionalities in accordance with special education law and best practices. Teacher licensure in special education not only empowers program graduates to become more effective educators with all students; it also increases the types of teaching opportunities graduates can pursue, whether in general education, special education or both.

With a critical teacher shortage in special education, there are significant job opportunities in this area. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in special education is projected to grow from 2019 to 2029 and demand for services is expected to rise due to earlier disability identification, resulting in higher enrollment in special education programs. Additionally, federal laws requiring financial support for special education bolsters a strong outlook for job security in this field.
