BA (Hons) Dance and Professional Practice with Foundation Year

The Foundation Year provides an opportunity to build up your academic writing skills and numeracy, and will also cover a range of subject specific content to fully prepare you for entry to an Undergraduate degree. This is an integrated four-year degree, with the foundation year as a key part of the course. You will need to successfully complete the Foundation Year to progress on to the first year of your bachelor’s degree. During your Foundation Year you will get the opportunity to talk to tutors about your degree study and future career aspirations, and receive guidance on the most appropriate Undergraduate course to help you achieve this; providing you meet the entry requirements and pass the Foundation Year.

This course will train you as a highly adaptable dancer. You will take part in daily technique classes including contemporary, ballet, commercial and body conditioning. You will tour work made by professional choreographers as well as choreograph your performances to be shown in our professional theatre. There is a focus on learning entrepreneurial skills to help you find, apply for, and create your own work, as well as developing your teaching and leadership skills. You will also be encouraged to think, write and talk about how dance theory informs your work.

You will be assessed through: Technique classes; Performances; Choreographic work; Teaching observations; Presentations; Portfolios; Essays. Professional practice is embedded within the course ensuring that you are ready to transition into a successful career in dance when you graduate. Internships, guest artists and opportunities to travel provide you with experience and networking opportunities throughout your degree. This course will prepare you for careers in: Performance; Choreography; Teaching; Running your own business; Arts management.
