BA (Hons) Modern History and Politics (Including Foundation Year)

Our four-year BA Modern History and Politics (including foundation year), will be suitable for you if your academic qualifications do not yet meet our entrance requirements for the three-year version of this course and you want a programme that increases your subject knowledge as well as improves your academic skills in order to support your academic performance. This four-year course includes a foundation year (Year Zero), followed by a further three years of study. During your Year Zero, you study three academic subjects relevant to your chosen course as well as a compulsory academic skills module. You obtain a thorough grounding in the fields of modern history and politics, and will consider how the two disciplines can be integrated. Our strengths lie in public and social history at Essex, so we draw the lines between how individuals and societies have coped in times of political change, upheaval and uncertainty. We discuss democracy, communism, power and the consequences of politics throughout history. You also investigate the scope of political science as a field of inquiry, and the methods used by political scientists, in order to explore questions concerning both what does occur in politics, and what should occur in politics. There is a range of relevant options to choose from in both departments and you choose to write your final-year dissertation in either politics or history.
