BA (Hons) Sociology with Social Psychology

Essex is a world leader in social science, with Sociology ranked among the top 50 departments on the planet according to the QS World University Rankings (2017). You examine how people function in society from a number of different perspectives, both theoretical and applied. You cover a variety of topics and issues in social psychology and sociology, using diverse approaches from both disciplines. Research methods covered reflect the breadth of our programme and include qualitative methods, survey research methods, experimental methods and evaluation methods. We aim to provide you with a critical understanding of the different disciplines relevant to human social activity and to enable you to understand and collect evidence using research methods including questionnaire surveys, interviews and controlled studies. You carry out an extensive piece of independent research including: planning, formulating, designing, choosing research methods, collecting data, analysing, interpreting and writing-up. Alongside this you develop your understanding of current debates and discussions about the nature of social and scientific knowledge and gain an understanding of the relationships between relevant academic theories and practice in social care and health professions.
