BA English

Hate speech has no home in Morton Hall. The Department of English stands against the abhorrent rhetoric of racism, bigotry, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, misogyny, and religious intolerance. We oppose any forms of harassment against UNCW colleagues and students, and repudiate any tactics that encourage cyberbullying, stoke fear, and suppress diversity in its myriad iterations.

Morton Hall is not just a brick-and-mortar structure. It is an emporium for the exchange of different ideas. As the current stewards of this space, we view it as our responsibility to promote comity, preserve the right to free expression, and affirm the dignity of all. The first floor of Morton Hall, which houses the English Department, has become a haven for students seeking intellectual and social community. And, it will stay this way.

The Department of English at UNCW provides an exceptional academic experience grounded in critical inquiry, creativity, and application. For students pursuing the B.A. degree in English, we offer three robust curriculum tracks in literary studies, professional writing, and teacher licensure. At the graduate level, students can design an intellectually sophisticated and satisfying course of study that aligns with their personal and professional objectives. We also offer a post-baccalaureate Certificate in Science and Medical Writing. Our students pursue careers as entrepreneurs, technical writers, authors, foreign and civil servants, reporters and editors, teachers, professors, website developers, lawyers, and health care professionals.
