Hello, I’m Mohamed Siraj Sheriff! I spent my entire life in Chennai, India, where every street, every memory, was tied to home. But life had other plans. After completing my BTech in Aeronautical Engineering, I packed my bags, hugged my family a little tighter, and boarded a flight to the UK to pursue my Master’s in Aerospace Engineering at Brunel University London.
Why did you decide to study abroad?
The decision of choosing to study abroad wasn’t a difficult one, but rather an interesting one. The reason I say it’s interesting is that this opportunity granted me an experience to explore something which is out of my comfort zone, which is something challenging. And I have always been keen to take up that challenge to become more confident in life when I look for a job in the future.
What were your concerns about studying abroad?
Lots of concerns arose when I came abroad for my studies. Concerns about the safety of the place and an immediate change in the culture were quite a bit of a surprise, although I was expecting changes to be there in a new place.
Was it exciting? Absolutely. But was it easy? Not at all.
Leaving behind my family, my comfort zone, and everything familiar felt like ripping a part of myself away. The first few weeks were tough, with new faces, new routines, and a different education system. But with time, I found my rhythm. Weekdays are a blur of lectures, assignments, and late-night revisions. Weekends are slower, with cooking, exploring, and spending time with friends who feel like family in a foreign land.
Moreover, financial concerns were important, only to limit the expenses and spend money wisely and sustainably. But once I took the time to understand each of these concerns, I adapted to them quite confidently, and I am moving ahead quite well.

What reasons led you to choose MSc Aerospace Engineering at Brunel University?
I am currently pursuing my MSc Aerospace Engineering at Brunel University London. The course at the university has been designed at an advanced level, where students can have an opportunity to explore the subject with an advanced approach. The professors are highly reputed and well qualified with PhD qualifications in different research areas.
Moreover, the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at this university is accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) and the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), which are professional bodies for aerospace students where they conduct workshops and placement training.
They also ensure that the engineering degree meets the academic requirements to qualify as a professional engineer. This gives students the opportunity to have more exposure to the aerospace industry here in the UK. Overall, these are the key reasons which led me to choose Brunel University London for my course.
How is life as an international student in the UK?
Moving to a new place, especially to a new country, is always a challenge. Staying alone, managing all by myself from cooking, laundry, cleaning up the room and washing the utensils after cooking is something which I was not used to, but I adapted to it after moving out.
Finding a part-time job was one of the big challenges as well. Because there aren’t many opportunities that will be available, since there are lots of other students who would’ve already taken the position. So, for securing a part-time job, a lot of effort should be made.

Such challenges keep me engaged and also give a way to understand how life changes when we start living independently in a new country.
One of my most surreal moments? That flight from Chennai to London. As an aerospace student, I’ve always been fascinated by planes, but this time, it wasn’t just a flight – it was my journey taking off.

And London? It still amazes me. The city’s energy, the history, the sheer scale… It’s something I never get tired of!
What are your plans after graduation?
My plan after my graduation is to have a job in a reputed aerospace company which has a sole focus on research and development in various aspects of aerospace engineering. This aim is particularly to be secured in the UK. This is my plan, which is quite simple. Hopefully, I get the chance to grab this opportunity and make the best use of it.
