This degree combines the study of one of our most important ecosystems, forests, with Geography, the subject of our time, dynamic and constantly evolving as the world around us changes. Geographers focus on key global challenges and work on developing solutions. A Geography degree will ensure you can make a difference in the 21st century. Bangor has one of the oldest Forestry departments in the country, and Forest Science has been taught here for over 110 years. Our BSc. Geography with Environmental Forestry placement degree is a 4-year programme, where you will spend Year 3 on placement with a placement provider (either UK-based or internationally). You must spend seven months undertaking your placement, but this can be extended up to a year. You can work in a relevant organisation, helping you to develop invaluable networks, boost your confidence, gain valuable work experience as well as improving your subject knowledge and skills enabling you to enhance your employability. Our staff will share their passion for the subject and their knowledge with you. Our modules reflect staff interests, and topics may include: Sustainability, Climate Change, Environmental Modelling, Forest Health, Soil Science, Ecosystem Services, Rivers and Catchments, Forest Management, and Environmental Policy. You will have the opportunity to study a broad range of human, physical and environmental topics in Year 1. In Years 2 and 4 you have increasing choice so you can specialise in the geographical and forest science topics that interest you most. At Bangor, many of our modules offer regular half and full-day field trips, taking advantage of our unique location, which is set against the backdrop of the dramatic North Wales coastline, Menai Strait, and the mountains of Snowdonia National Park. We provide fieldwork opportunities in North Wales and SW England or SW Scotland in Years 1 and 2, included in your tuition fee. There is the option to go overseas, in Year 3, to Tenerife. We offer funds to help with fieldwork costs. You can gain international experience by studying (at one of our partner institutions) or working abroad as part of your degree, with our International Experience Year. You will become well-trained in a range of research methods (field and laboratory). You will acquire specialised technical and practical skills (Geographical Information Systems (GIS), IT, Statistics), as well as transferrable and professional skills (leadership, team player, communicator). During your final year you will conduct your own research project, under staff guidance, allowing you to showcase your abilities developed throughout your studies. Our graduates have gone on to work as: sustainability officers, data analysts, GIS officers/cartographers, environmental consultants, forest managers, conservationists, or taken on roles in business, finance, human resources, marketing, PR and sales. If you prefer a three-year programme, you might consider our sister courses, BSc Geography (F800), BA Geography (L700) or BSc Geography with Environmental Forestry (F803). If you have more of an interest in forestry you could consider our related course BSc Forestry (D500).
